I know for, well really the rest of the week, we'll all be hearing and reading and seeing images and news stories of people that just looked the devil in the eye.
Katrina has already won her spot in the history books for being the largest, scariest, most dangerous storm in recent history. And I must say that thank God she lost a little bit of steam before hitting Louisiana and Mississippi, or things could have been so much worse.
But now is the time to do something. The most important first step is money. Money is used for buying water, securing a place to stay, cover immediate needs. So here are some links to reputable (how sad to have to say that!) groups that can help:
Link for the American Red Cross Diasaster Relief Fund
A link to the Salvation Army
A link for the Charity Hospital of New Orleans which provides medical care
The Convoy of Hope provides building supply lines
The Humane Society. Unfortunately many people can't or don't take their pets with them. Its hard to think about it, but these animals suffer the same as small children. Not understanding what's happend just that their homes and owners are gone. They need help with a safe place to be and safe way to be reunited with their families.
There is also Noah's Wish which works to rescue and shelter animals displaced by the hurricane.
These are just starting points. You may want to speak to your church or schools about gathering needed supplies like diapers and formula for children, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, anti-bacterial gels for sending once more information is provided. Even little things like small stuffed animals to comfort frightened children. Batteries for tv's and radios, little things that make the difference!
Every dollar makes a difference! Please check out one or more of the links, and please think of the animals too!
